Ongoing repairs have now become urgent repairs

In 2025, discovered that there are major problems with the south aisle roof. WE do have an annual maintenance programme, but lead only lasts so long. The time for patching and minor repairs is finished and we are faced with the prospect of re-roofing the whole of the south aisle.
The cost of this is likely to be at least £100,000! Currently we are working in close collaboration with the Parochial Church Council and the church architect to see what options we have and scope the work.
In the mean time, minor repairs will be conducted to ensure no further water ingress.
Following on from the quinquennial review (Sept 2024), we have prioritised a few urgent projects: –
To begin with, we plan to carry out a ‘basket’ of small, but urgent, repairs, including: –
- Repairs to the Bellringers’ window – Completed in 2026
- Repairing the vandalism done to the crypt windows
- Reseating coping stones on ‘Postgate’s Folly’
- Repairs to the belfry floor
- Plasterwork by the South Door
In our longer-term plans, we also have in mind more work inside the Church: –
Internal repairs
- Repairs to the door jambs on both the south and north doors
- Dealing with the crumbling plaster on both the north and south walls internally, which will require removal of the pews.
- The pew decking throughout the church needs repair. We plan to remove and re-use what we can of the decking on the two side aisles for the repairs and then replace with flagstones at the side.
